Who are we and why do we care?
Our founder, Ewan Phillips, is a man who strives every day to make the world a better, safer place.
With a career founded on community projects and creativity, from adult social care and education to speciality food and drink development, the work he’s doing today with ‘And it Has’ is a natural outcome of all he’s done before.
He’s creative, strategic, but most of all, he is determined to keep food and drink customers safe and happy, and to help food service businesses to succeed by helping every potential customer to see what’s possible and not be blinded by their dietary restrictions.
A few years ago, he went out for dinner with a group of friends. They included a vegan, a coeliac, and somebody with a severe nut allergy. As they watched the young waiter run back and forth to the kitchen, checking options with the chef (who he was pretty sure was getting stressed by all the questions), they knew that there had to be a much better way to make dining out more accessible to those with such eating challenges. They also knew that the answer lay in the power of accurate, accessible, and relevant information.
He listened to the stories of people with dietary restrictions. They told him about catastrophic nights out, confused restaurant staff, tutting customers, ‘special’ meals that arrived after everybody else in the group had already finished eating, and, most shockingly, he heard about fatal food reactions.
Applying their love of structure and data management, the team set out to do something to make a difference by eliminating the risk posed by inadequate ingredient information, and poorly presented or confusing data.
He knew that nothing ever succeeds if it’s too complicated, and so designed a system that’s quick and easy to use.
He knew that the heart of every system that works is robust data – in this case, detailed breakdowns of the ingredient and nutritional information of every dish on each menu.
Ewan turned to other experts because he knows he can’t do this alone. His ‘IT Guys’ are scarily clever, and his nutritionists and food and allergy consultants are highly qualified and experienced. His wide network of food industry consultants and associates means he can tap into the most up-to-date information.
